[cvsnt] What causes this error message???

This happens when I do 'cvs ls' on a new laptop:

cannot stat directory D:/CVSTEMP/CVSLOCKS/ a module that consists of many directories
# spread out over the entire source repository

What is the cause of such behaviour? All other commands seem to work OK from WinCvs.
Version info:

cvs ver

*****CVS exited normally with code 0*****

Client: Concurrent Versions System (CVSNT) 1.11.1.3  (Build 57g) (client/server)
