Without wanting to start a toolsize war, another alternative is
PostgresQL, which is free and is fast and very powerful.

It's a bit old now - both MySQL and PostgresQL have
advanced since then, but I believe PostgresQL is still ahead.
One big issue is native Windows support. That's starting to
