Looking at the code I'm surprised if it actually did that..  it looks 
more like a side-effect of the way that directories were handled in 
2.0.41a (which had its own problems).  A quick check against a 
sourceforge repositry confirms this...

I'll look at implementing it if I can, although I'm not sure the 
client/server protocol will handle it correctly.
