I don't know if this helps you any, but I just tried to compile on
FreeBSD 5.2 and it fails in diff with something about excess elements.
The ./configure ran fine AFAICT, here's a partial output from make:

I'm /very/ new to FreeBSD so I'm not sure of what's going on at this
point. This was my first attempt to compile anything on it.
