I think I was trying something more like the OP was trying:

cvs update -jHEAD:"yesterday" -jHEAD

...which caused CVS to promptly rm all the files in my sandbox !! 
(obviously I knew I did something wrong, so I didn't post the 
embarrassing details).

It seems intuitive to try it that way, is that syntax for named tags only?
