ThanX Oliver this resolves my immediate problem with my modules
configuration; however I would still like to ask the community how to
encode modules within another module at different levels using the
modules2 format.
I'll probably just wait for the updated documentation but if anyone out
there as a neat example I would appreciate a snip-it :)

Don't use the -d option on update then (aka "create missing
subfolders"). It is "the natural enemy" of virtual modules such as the
one you defined above. AFAICT Tortoise enables it by default
nevertheless. Someone ought to get slapped around the head for that...
