Try
cvs version
(without the dash). This shows you the client and the server seperately. 
For me, it looks like:

J:\>cvs version
Client: Concurrent Versions System (CVSNT) 2.0.58a (client/server)
Server: Concurrent Versions System (CVSNT) 2.0.41a (client/server)
