On Windows XP open Explorer, then go:
Tools/FolderOptions/View/AdvancedSettings
Now scroll down the list until you find the item:
"Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" and then UNCHECK that
checkbox!!
This is what Tony meant by his comment on the sharing.
Microsoft decided to recommend the Windows98 network sharing model
(=simple) rather than the more advanced NTFS model used on all NT
versions until now. This W98 model only requires a password and does
not handle any user identity so the share is accessed using the Guest
account. As a side effect Microsoft makes the complete PC inaccessible
for network users in this mode and makes it impossible to even back up
the hard drive from another server....
I have no idew what moron at Microsoft decided this was a good idea,
but it certainly breaks network access completely for advanced users
and systems.
