No I don't have it turned on.

Just tried checking out the branch:

When I checkout the branch no files are marked read only.

When I checkout the trunk with the merge options set to the branch it 
gets really weird: all files *except* the new ones are made read only. 
So I end up with a reversed situation compared to the situation after 
the update-merge I described in my previous post...
