I go as far as putting the date into the tag/branch name.

Branch : dc_2005_01_05_v4_45_rX_branch
    Tag : dc_2005_01_18_v4_45_r1_release
    Tag : dc_2005_01_21_v4_45_r2_release
    Tag : dc_2005_03_22_v4_45_r3_release
