FR_CA isn't a codepage.  Plus forcing won't stop you losing characters 
it just overrides the clients' idea of what the server is sending it - 
if it's sending something stupid like 7-bit ASCII with extensions what 
you'll translate to won't make any sense.  Forcing is only useful 
against cvshome.org servers where you know the character set that's 
being sent.

What do you get when you type 'locale -a' on the server?
