This was my first thought too. But today I tried again, with the full 
CVSROOT after the -d switch and it worked.

On the web page, there are two possible cvs commands for checkout:

1) Standard:
cvs -d :pserver:cvs at cvs.cvsnt.org:/usr/local/cvs checkout cvsnt

(BTW: I think there is little mistake on the command on the web page; 
there's a colon after the "cvs" username)

2) Short form:
cvs -d ::cvs.cvsnt.org co cvsnt

I got the error using the short form yesterday and tried the standard 
one today which worked.

The cvs -t -t -t log with the short form for the relevant part (I hope I 
didn't miss anything):
