Yes, as long as you are diligent about backing up your repository and 
careful when messing with the files.

If you ever, EVER need those files back then you should just leave it 
(or move it under an archive folder).  Messing around in the repository 
is not a good idea without extreme care.  However, it isn't dangerous to 
your files if you are careful (but back everything up!).
