I've had this problem a few weeks ago. Although I didn't find a 
solution, I found a workaround: Use the "long form" for the CVSROOT you 
specify with the -d option, e.g. :
cvs -d :pserver:cvs at cvs.cvsnt.org:/usr/local/cvs co cvsnt
Hope it works for you, it did for me...
