[cvsnt] getting wrong version as HEAD

Hi all,
running CVSNT 2.0.58d on SuSe Linux 9.2 as server and using wincvs 2.0.3.1
which was fine for months since a few days (start of year 2007...) produces
the following error:
If you commit a file which has let's say originally version 1.3 on CVS
server, you locally see then version 1.4 on your local client after commit.
If you try to commit the next time, the server reports 'up to date check
failed - run update first'. If you do so, you get back to version 1.3,
although version 1.4 exists on the server and is corrctly displayed as HEAD
when you look at e.g. graph view in WinCVS.
If anybody else tries to update that file, the result is the same: he gets
back to version 1.3. Even if the whole repository is completely checked out
from scratch, you get the non HEAD version 1.3, even if 1.4 exists.
I looked at the ,v files (this behaviour can be reproduced appearently with
any file right now) at the database, but they are not corrupted.
When I remove the file manually from the database and add it later on by the
client (as version 1.1) any further update or checkout breaks with the
error: could not find desired version 1.3.
I also tried a Tortoise client, same behaviour.
I would appreciate any hint what fails!
Thanks and regards
Georg
